Unit 31: Social Action/Unit 5: Working to a Brief

TASK 1

-Find a social action documentary on an issue that inspires you

-After watching this social action documentary you will need to write a blog post explaining your reaction to it concerning the areas below.  Your post should be approx. 300-400 words in length.

  • Summarise the purpose of the campaign
  • Effectiveness as a social action documentary
  • Your personal response
-Be prepared to share your documentary with the class next lesson

The documentary that I have chosen is called ‘Plastic Ocean’ and I have chosen
this one specifically because of global warming and pollution taking over the earth at a rapid
rate and it’s getting out of control.
The purpose of this campaign is to make people stop littering because it’s affecting
sea life. Animals of the sea, especially fish are dying as a result of this and it’s something that
could be solved if everyone were to pay attention and work together to stop all pollution
as one. A journalist who goes by the name of Craig Leeson originally set out to find a
certain type of whale but come across a plastic dump in what should actually be a rubbish
free ocean, as this documentary unfolds he joins a free diver called Tanya Streeter and
other scientists and researchers. After traveling to 20 different places around the world
over 1460 days to find out what is truly causing the unbearable sight of our oceans and
revealing the scary truths about plastic pollution and what we can do to help.
The effect that it has on us is that it begins to show us how we are harming the ocean
such as the dead fish at the bottom of the sea, stuck in plastic rings and because they can't swim
backward as their gills will then fill up with water and with turtles, they can get plastic bags
wrapped around their heads and end up unable to see and suffocate.

I chose this specific documentary because I believe that it reaches out to their target
audience in an effective way. Their target audience is people aged 16-25 in my opinion,
this is since this is our future that we are destroying. At this rate, if we were to continue doing
what we are doing, sea life would become extinct for the reason that plastic takes a long while
to decompose, meaning that it will break down into small pieces named microplastics which are
harmful to sea life.

Kony 2012 vs Food for Thought.

The difference between the two is that with Kony, I feel like it was more effective because of the commentary and the methods used to draw people in to watch and support their movement within the community to help and 'Make Kony Famous' so that they can find him and put him in jail. However the Food for Thought is more about showing people what can happen to her business, the difference between the two is that whilst FfT is about a personal problem whereas Kony affected the whole continent of Afro
